Beautiful Mind John Nash died
The movie 'A beautiful mind' was inspired by John Nash, the brilliant mathematician who died May 23, 2015 in a car crash with Progressed Sun square his Saturn, to signal a period ending. The movie is about the period just before he was taken to hospital after being diagnosed with schizophrenia. It took 30 years to be able to live in society again. Here is the chart with transits and progressions for February 1958, when he entered hospital.
What is important in the natal chart are:
- Uranus without aspects within orb 5 degrees
- Sun/Moon semi square Uranus AND opposition Lillith
- Pluto conjunct Ascendant (getting over the Ascendant by progression)
- Jupiter rising before the natal Sun
This is highlighting Uranus and Pluto, and signaling stressed nerves, but also Jupiter and Pluto (successes) and the issue of being different (Lillith and Uranus). The Astro ID gives all the keys.
In February 1958 there were a few important aspects to consider:
1. Saturn was in the 6th house of illnesses, inconjunct the midpoint Ascendant/Midheaven. In the natal chart, this midpoint is conjunct Chiron, showing the crucial importance of healing. Inconjunctions (quincunxes) are frequent in moments of illnesses or when balance is lost (perhaps due to having to give up on something or someone).
2. Transit Uranus is square Ascendant/MC (and Chiron) and transit Pluto is inconjunct MC, so that both of the most highlighted natal planets take part. It was a time of extreme intensity, with a risk for the position in society, too. This is a combination for resistance, too.
3. Progressed Midheaven conjunct Jupiter and transit Jupiter opposition Progressed Midheaven and conjunct Jupiter is a triple indication for getting support, help and advice (often given by a doctor)
The fact Saturn and Uranus are in hard aspect with AC/MC at the same time illustrates the issue of 'breaking free or limited freedom'.
4. Progressed Lillith was conjunct Midheaven.
It is because someone asked me to have a look at Lillith, too, that I included Lillith in the chart and in this case Lillith is very important. Lilith is inconjunct Moon, conjunct MC and opposite Sun/Moon. That makes it hard to be 'normal', especially since Uranus is semi square Sun/Moon, too. A genius is always a bit 'different' and so was John Nash. Uranus and Lillith seem to indicate this.

100% positive Bogus
Recent media news about astrology drew my attention these days. Here are the articles:
- http://www.laboratoryequipment.com/news/2015/05/astrology-isnt-100-bogus en
- http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2015-05/uoc-aac051315.php
Titles:
- Astrology isn’t 100% bogus
- Astrology and celebrity: Seasons really do influence personality
One of the stories are about a water season in astrology. It says that December-March are in the 'Water Season' and Water is creativity in astrology. Oh really? Another part of the story is that in uneven month you'd be more extravert! Months and signs don't correspond, water is related to the water signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces and calendar month numbers are more related to numerology than astrology. So, there is something wrong about the articles (and maybe about the analysis, too, I don't know).
Nevertheless, thanks to the scientist who may be in trouble now, because in his world it is not 'done' to refer to astrology at all. Maybe he didn't, in fact (and it were the journalist). Never mind! It is a positive story about astrology and that is far better than the ones we had last year. Only astrologers will know that it is partly bogus.
PS Is there any scientific explanation for the fact that Mr. Bogus was produced by a company names Zodiac Entertainments? LOL

Innovative science; Jupiter-Uranus + Mercury-Saturn
Today I read about Leslie Dewan, born November 27, 1984 and already a celebrated scientist. She is one of the two co-founders of Transatomic Power - innovative way to use nuclear waste for clean and safe energy-. Now what if that could be a success?
In astrology innovations are part of the vocabulary related to Jupiter+Uranus and science is Mercury + Saturn.
Dr Dewan's chart is in line with that.
There are keys (Jupiter-Uranus) to being innovative, surprising or 'different' in a positive way:
1. Sun in Sagittarius with Moon in Aquarius. Sagitturius is ruled by Jupiter, Aquarius is ruled by Uranus. This combination of Sun and Moon adds to a helicopter view.
2. This goes with Jupiter semi sextile Uranus for innovations, sudden windfalls and a helicopter view
Mercury and Saturn (the combination of science) are special.
3. Mercury and Saturn are 'calling' (not making narrow aspects in sign) for science
4. Saturn rises before the Sun (the classics, status and management come first)
5. Mercury is Out of Bounds (declination 25°42' 6" S), just like Moon and Venus
So, on that particular day in 1984, there was a big chance for a scientist to be innovative! It doesn't mean that everybody born that day was to be a scientist, but whatever that person does will be serious and ambitious and somehow innovative, surprising or 'different' in a positive way. It very much depends on the hour of birth and circumstances, genes, culture and social position in whAt way...
dHere is the chart for that day:

Charts of geniuses Majorana, Perelman and Turing
Dutch professor Kouwenhoven and crew
managed to ‘see’ the Majorana particle, an important part of a super computer
to be (but maybe you’d better read BBC about it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17695944
)
The Majorana particle was predicted by
Ettore Majorana, a genius who disappeared at age 31. His chart and ‘disappearance’
looks like that of Grigori Perelman, a contemporary genius. That is what I
found when I remembered the Saturn in Pisces of Grigori Perelman and started
looking for more similarities in the chart positions, more specific I had a look at their Sun, Mercury and Saturn. I found that Perelman and Majorana both have Mars rising before the 'calling' Sun and Saturn in Pisces. They share a Mercury-Jupiter aspect. Both dealt with a challenging transit of Pluto when they withdrew or disappeared.
Here is the complete comparison of the charts of three
famous scientists: Majorana, Perelman and Turing. These geniuses have/had
difficulties. Majorana simply disappeared, age 31. Perelman now lives the life
of a hermit. Turing, instead of being honored, suffered from being prosecuted
because of his homosexuality and died in suspicious circumstances. What they
share is a ‘calling’ Sun (drawing attention at any possible level) and a
Mercury-Jupiter aspect. Majorana and Perelman both have Saturn in Pisces.
Quoting myself:
The opposite of Jupiter in Pisces, endless mistrust. They seem to feel obligated to suffer, be lonely or their faith is a heavy load to carry. Very few politicians have this positionhttp://astropost.blogspot.com/2008/04/pisces-sun-sign-pisces-moon-planets.html
MAJORANA
Ettore Majorana is the scientist who
‘invented’ the Majorana particle. After that he vanished on March 27, 1938, age
31.
This is his chart (B-rated!) with transits and progressions for March 27, 1938.
His Saturn is in Pisces. Mars rises before
his sun. When he vanished it was in a challenging period with lots of stress, apparently, because transit Pluto was sesquisquare his Progressed Sun.
His natal Sun doesn’t make major
(Ptolemaic) aspects in sign or orb 5 degrees. . I name that a ‘calling’ sun: he
will draw attention at any possible level.
Charts of scientists often have a
Mercury-Saturn aspect. Majorana’s Mercury is quatronovile Saturn.
Majorana’s Mercury is septile Jupiter.
PERELMAN
Grigori Perelman is a scientist who solved
a mathematical problem. He didn’t want to collect the prize and lives like a
hermit (see the English Pravda: http://english.pravda.ru/science/tech/28-04-2011/117727-Grigori_Perelman-0/ ) His Saturn is in Pisces. Mars rises before his sun. When he withdrew
from society, it was in a challenging period: transit Pluto was inconjunct his Sun.
His natal Sun doesn’t make major aspects in
sign or orb 5 degrees. He will draw attention at any possible level.
Charts of scientists often have a
Mercury-Saturn aspect, I said, but Perelman doesn’t have it. His Mercury is
conjunct Jupiter.
TURING
You
don’t need to have a Saturn in Pisces to be a genius. Alan Turing’s Saturn is
in Taurus, for example.
His natal Sun doesn’t make major aspects in
sign or orb 5 degrees. He will draw attention at any possible level.
Like
in a lot of charts of scientists, his chart has an aspect between Mercury and
Saturn: the novile. Mercury is
inconjunct Jupiter.
PS PALLAS
Just like in the chart of Einstein, Pallas is important in the chart of Turing. Pallas is 'calling' in the chart of Majorana.
Isn't astrology interesting?
LINKS
Einstein's chart also has Mercury in aspect with Saturn AND Jupiter (see: http://astropost.blogspot.com/2008/12/thinking-about-mercury-and-saturn.html ) and http://astropost.blogspot.com/2011/09/uranus-in-aries-and-chart-of-einstein.html

The astrology of the Bone Wars
The Bone Wars started when two competitive paleontologists
came across 'themselves' in the ‘Great Dinosaur Rush’ of 1877-1892. Episode 4 of O'Hanlons
Heroes - a series of discoveries through the 19th Century – is about the
competition between Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh. They
collected numerous bones of dinosaurs and tried to be number one in the field.
They ended without a penny, partly because of the ‘war’ between them. They had a lot in
common. Same 'job', same attitude towards each other, same dirty method to discredit the other one.
I want to show you how their charts looked at each other and how the
synastry between the charts tells us that the heroes ‘deserved each other’.
Edward Drinker Cope was born on July 28,
1840, a Leo with a Leo Moon, Sun
sesquisquare Uranus, most probably Mars rising before the Sun (and Moon) and
Mars inconjunct Neptune.
Othniel Charles Marsh was born October 29,
1831, a Scorpio with a Leo Moon, Sun square Uranus, Mars rising before the Sun
and Mars square Neptune, tightly.
From what they share (Leo Moon, Sun
afflicted by Uranus, Mars afflicted by Neptune and Mars rising before the Sun)
it is without doubt that they were active, competitive and in a way tending to
negative ways to fight or compete. Both longed to be the star in their field.
Both were outsiders with the will to be ‘different’ and a tendency to be
controversial. Those rather arrogant macho men were competing each other in
remote places, digging for bones. They were enemies, but not from the start.
There is a Venus sextile Venus synastry that tells us about sympathy in the
past. But:
- They have Sun square Sun. Such a synastry
aspect raises the question:’ Who is the boss, who is the real star?’
- There are two inconjunctions between the
charts. Mars of Edward Cope is inconjunct Jupiter of Othniel Marsh and sort of
a vice versa: Pluto of Marsh is inconjunct Jupiter of Cope. Inconjunctions
cause lack of balance. Mars-Jupiter and Jupiter-Pluto are combinations of
success and progress. Inconjunctions however don’t match. If they had joined
forces, could they have had the same extraordinary result and amount of bones?
Perhaps it was the competition that contributed to the results.
- Saturn of Cope is square the Pholus of
Marsh. Though many of their contemporaries shared this synastry aspect, we can
conclude that it is not a favorable one. Marsh as the catalyst of the guilt and
restrictions for Cope?
- I would not be surprised if both had
Sun/Moon in aspect with Uranus. That would have motivated them to go on and on
and on…
Here is the chart of the day of birth of Edward. The positions outside the circle (the 'transits) are the positions of the day of birth of Othniel.
Anyway, they were two of a kind (rather
macho outsiders) and they were competing in the same field with not matching
sun signs and apparently they stimulated each other in their competition. They
made a great contribution to science that way. And their story is a
contribution to astrology, too. Their charts confirm the characters and the
competition. I particularly like this quote, that seems very Moon Leo to me:
"The
patrician Edward may have considered Marsh not quite a gentleman. The academic
Othniel probably regarded Cope as not quite a professional."
They didn’t match, they tried to ‘beat’
each other the hard way, but if they hadn’t met, there wouldn’t have been such
a storyJ. Sometimes people meet in order to
stimulate each other to do what they always wanted to. On Astromarkt (http://www.astromarkt.net/sharing-aspects)
you see this about sharing Mars-Neptune (I mean when both have an aspect
between Mars and Neptune in the chart):
Mars-Neptune: Being without job, sharing drugs or alcohol or medications. Maybe they are working together in a health or non profit organization. Or having affairs...Sorry, this is an aspect that does not cheer up…
Apparently
with this aspect you can also have ‘dirty’ competition…

Uranus in Aries and chart of Einstein
This is about Uranus in Aries, Einstein's Mercury-Saturn and particle accelerators like the one above, re: CERN's amazing test results. And about what if Uranus in Aries is conjunct your Mercury-Saturn...
In Astropost: Thinking about Mercury and Saturn the chart of Albert Einstein is one of the examples of scientists with a tight aspect between Mercury and Saturn. Einstein had Mercury conjunct Saturn in the natal chart. Transit Uranus is conjunct this conjunction now that there is news about particles breaking the speed of light. It has always been assumed that nothing could be faster than the speed of light. Albert Einstein had proven this. This is the chart of Albert Einstein (AA rated, source Astrodatabank) with transits and progressions for now.
PS
Mercury-Uranus combinations mirror unusual ideas and unusual communications. In a community where astrology is being discussed and not taken seriously (most communities don't, except the astrologers' community:), talking about astrology causes controversy. Maybe that is why so many astrologers have a Mercury-Uranus combination in their chart. With Saturn, they might try not to mention that they study astrology at all.

Now that there are surprising results at CERN in Switzerland (test results question the validity of E=MC2: particles were nanoseconds faster than light, see BBC) transit Uranus in Aries is conjunct Einstein's Mercury-Saturn conjunction. If the results of CERN are true, one of the most important ideas are wrong. Yesterday (when the news was published) Mars was exactly trine Uranus. The combination of Mars and Uranus is the combination of the short fuse and accelerated speed. Uranus is the symbol of change, news, surprises and worlds turned upside down. Sometimes Uranus is also the symbol of a lot of fuss....
MERCURY-SATURN-URANUS
When your (professional or official) theories and ideas are at stake or cause a controversy you might also see Uranus in aspect with Mercury and Saturn. This transit could also give some new flashing insight that enables you to renew old concepts.
Another possible way to reflect a combination of Mercury,Saturn and Uranus is 'limited freedom of speech' (when your ideas are not being appreciated by the officials or are not 'political correct')... and your opposition against it. Whenever the official theory or idea (Mercury-Saturn) is being questioned or whenever there is rebellion, Uranus is there, too.

In the post about Uranus in Aries I mentioned the correspondence between Uranus'move to Aries and particle accelerators. The first one was built in 1927/1928, when Uranus was moving to Aries...

Igor Sutyagin's transits and progressions

In October of 1999 he was arrested and accused of working for the CIA. That was in the year of progressed Sun conjunct Saturn in Pisces (being restricted, set back or blamed, being – found- responsible...etc.). In 2004 the trial was completed, he was convicted and sent to a prisoners camp.
The exchange is a turning point in life. The positions of planets and lights are for noon on the day of his birth in Moscow, only. But still: there is obviously change in the air for those born on January 17, 1965…
Transit Pholus in the 13th degree of Sagittarius is square his progressed Sun and semi square his natal Sun.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
The progressed Sun is the position of the Sun x days for x years after your birthday. So when you are 21 and was born on the 7th, the sun's position of the 28th of the same month is the position of your progressed Sun, roughly. To quickly find the degree of your progressed Sun, just ad 1 degree for each year and you get the estimated position. Astro.com provides progressed charts with the correct positions of each planet and the progressed Sun and Moon, MC and Ascendant. So you don't have to calculate this! For more info, see the label ' progression'...

The Saturn in Pisces!!! of Perelman
Grigory or Grigori Perelman, a famous and mysterious mathematician, turned down a prize for solving a mathematical problem (he did that about 7 years ago). It is hot news now that he refused the prize. One site mentions that he said that an American mathematician (Richard Hamilton) deserved the prize, too. Others say that he is disappointed in maths. And some think that he is happy with the honour of solving the problem.
No scientist ever refused the Clay Mathematics prizes...But Perelman did it. This all happens with transit Pluto inconjunct his progressed Sun. That is a statement for lost self esteem or…for lack of balance (inconjunction) between authority (Pluto) and life style (Sun). The prize (Pluto) has a price (Pluto) that he won't pay:) Why didn’t he accept it? He could have accepted the prize and shared the money with the American, too. Or the Clay Mathematics Institution could have considered to let them share the prize. Strange story?…He has Saturn in the last degree of Pisces (conjunct Aries Point and the fixed star Scheat), calling! (no Ptolemaic aspects) and I quote my ironic self about Saturn in Pisces:
The opposite of Jupiter in Pisces, endless mistrust. They seem to feel obligated to suffer, be lonely or their faith is a heavy load to carry. Very few politicians have this position
His Saturn has exclamation marks!!! Perhaps Saturn is also angular or ruling his Ascendant (he has a beard, he is alone, etc.) but that is just guessing. Jupiter and Uranus recently were at the same point by transit, offering a momentum of positive change. Here you see the positions on his day of birth, with transits and progressions:
MORE T&P
For those interested: there are more transits and progressions now. Transit Saturn is opposition natal Saturn and most often that is the kind of transit that shows the bad sides of responsibilities, career, age and status. Well, maybe the upcoming transit of Jupiter trine his progressed Sun brings luck? Because strange enough the man has Venus trine Pluto (perfect for earning money)! I would like to see the hour of birth for the position of Venus, Pluto and Saturn!
BATCHELOR
They say that Perelman is unemployed and lives with his mother. The batchelor in the chart can be found in the Venus-Neptune opposition with Mars square Uranus (two out of four aspects for divorce/not getting married; the other two are Moon afflicted by Saturn or Neptune).
WHAT DID HE SOLVE?
If you really want to know, follow this link...
HOW ABOUT YOU?
It takes more than the position of Saturn in Pisces to become a sort of a hermit. Naoki Hattori (a Japanese racing driver, see Mars-Uranus) was born on the same day. I don’t know if he is married or not, but I do know that the Saturn of Grigori Perelman must have an important place in the chart to become the aloof scientist that he is.

Nicolaus Copernicus reburial

URANUS, CERES, PHOLUS, NEPTUNE AND SATURN
- Transit Pholus is exactly conjunct the progressed midpoint AC/MC, mirroring a crucial turning point. Remember that the cross point of Ascendant and Midheaven represents the exact location of birth in a natal chart or more precisely: YOU at a certain spot on earth. The progressed AC/MC is reflecting further developments regarding your special place on earth. Pholus is the symbol of turning points. When Pholus is on AC/MC you might expect a turning point regarding your whereabouts.
- Transit Neptune is quindecile progressed Venus (and progressed Venus is 105 degrees from natal Midheaven. This looks like a matter of estetics and arts and ...sentimental and romantic atmospheres.
- Transit Uranus is exactly trine progressed Ceres. I am not sure how to read this. New home? News about genetic material?
- Progressed Midheaven is inconjunct natal Saturn.
That is a very strange kind of aspect on a day when his name and reputation has been cleared. A cleric said sorry for the comdemnations of Copernicus'theories by the Church.
For a man in his conditions (MC), or should I say for his remains, this 'goodbye' (Saturn) is perhaps rather disproportional (inconjunction), even considering the historical fact that the church did him wrong and certainly too (inconjunction) late(Saturn).
- The progressed Midheaven of Nicolaus Copernicus is conjunct natal Neptune and inconjunct natal Saturn and that could be read as 'suffering because of a developping condition'. Also transit Neptune is square natal MC, reflecting discontentment or confusion and being isolated. However, we can't read this chart like if Copernicus was still alive. Considering the fact that his NAME and REPUTATION (MC) is involved and not his condition (he is dead) perhaps these Neptunic aspects should be considered as mystification and getting some kind of heroic and 'holy' status.
CHARTS AFTER DEATH
Charts can't be read without some knowledge about a person's situation (economical, social and fysical). Charts can be read after death, but in that case the transits and progressions correspond with ideas about the person involved (and not, of course, with the person's well being - if you don't believe in such an active 'life after death').

CERN, chart of first result

Geneva, Switzerland was today: beams collided at 7 TeV in the LHC at 13:06 CEST, when beams collided. And here above is the chart ot the moment. There is a very tight combination of Quaoar (symbol of new realities and creations) square Jupiter/Uranus (the sudden success). It is one of the better combinations in this chart. There are worse (Saturn opposition Midheaven, Neptune and Chiron on AC/MC and Sun/Moon) but perhaps they just show the fear. And how about the oriental, calling Uranus? This position might just as well mirror the experiment as the controversy or the news.
It is just a moment in time and place for a scientific experiment that a lot of people find extraordinary expensive, useless and dangerous. Here is a funny way to have a look at black holes:

Chart of Rajendra Pachauri (IPCC)

TALENT
There is no known hour of birth, but...it is easy to see the man of controversies (Sun exactly square Uranus) and the fact that communications (and writing) are part of the 'ups and downs': Mercury is square Jupiter and Saturn.
Is he an artistic talent? With Moon in Pisces, Venus quintile Neptune and Moon probably opposition Neptune, I'd guess so. I also like his Venus quintile Quaoar, reflecting the talent to creatively shape new worlds and new concepts.
PLUTO
Pluto (the symbol of strategy, politics, power, influence, money and potential) is the first outer planet rising before his natal Sun and that means that his orientation is in the Plutonic field. Noel Tyl writes that Pluto oriental is the symbol of the importance of knowing the right kind of folks. Pluto doesn't make any aspect in sign or orb 5 degrees. That is an important reflection of power and knowing people - networking - at any possible level. Mr. Pachauri knows the most important opinion makers in the world.
About two years ago he had a life changing aspect: progressed Sun squares his important Pluto! That is when he got the Nobel Prize, together with Al Gore, whose Pluto is conjunct the Mercury of Pachauri (and that means influence on his ideas). The influence is mutual: Pachauri's Pluto is conjunct the Ascendant of Al Gore.
CHARTS

Here above is the chart of the day of birth of Rajendra Pachauri, born in Nainital, India on August 20, 1940. He is Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Economics and just like with Al Gore, his Mercury is in conflict with Saturn. In the article about sharing aspects on Astromarkt I wrote:
Mercury and Saturn: sharing the same hard convictions, being serious about that. With hard aspects you are both mistrusting the world outside and that is what joins you.

Chart of Rachel Carson (Mercury-Saturn)
There is Climate Conference in Copenhagen going on. Time to get back into time: the sixties. That is when a environmental issue is hot stuff. American marine biologist Rachel Carson writes 'Silent Spring' and 50 years later Wikipedia writes two things. In English her prophecies about the dangers of pesticides came true. In Dutch her ideas about those dangers are referred to as 'Rachel Carson syndrome'. This means that there is at least a controversy:)
Her chart is on Astrodatabank.
Rachel Carson has, just like many scientist, an aspect between Mercury and Saturn, in her case a quintile for creative conservative thinking (following the standing theories). The quintile enabled her to develop new theories. Saturn is conjunct the Ascendant, a prominent placement! Rachel Carson's book was a doom theory. She wrote 'Silent Spring', referring to a spring without birds. It was probably the first book ever written about the environment and the dangers coming from human beings. And it attributed to the end of using DDT.
Although she certainly was a woman with a passion (Venus nor Mars are making aspects), she never got married. She was totally devoted to her job (Sun/Moon square Mars: being motivated by working). I'll be back soon with more about Sun/Moon midpoint and motivations...

Rehab for Alan Turing

Yesterday I mentioned the name of Alan Turing in the post about Dutroux, related to the combination of discretion and dangerous secrets (Neptune/Pluto). Today I read that there will be an official appology for the way the authorities prosecuted Alan Turing after WWII for being gay, in spite of his tremendous value in the battle against Nazi-Germany. In his natal chart Sun is conjunct Pluto (out of sign). These days transit Pluto is opposition his natal Sun. For more: I also have posted comments on the original post about his chart, that you can find on this blog, too, with links to the news about Turing:

Carlson's test of astrology: not scientific enough?

I am not surprised about his findings. I have another example of such a 'test' that I published months ago (I named it "Do the witch test"). In that test the sceptics also worked against their own protocol. They told the astrologer that it took at least 7 charts (why?) and she had to find 7 (most of them not very life changing) events and find which chart matched with the event. They even didn't mention the exact data, two birth data and event data were equal and they gave her a few hours in a cold place to do what they already knew (as they said): fail.
Carlson's study is a more famous one than the test of Skepsis.be. Sceptics all over the world name it as an argument against astrology. So the news that another scientist is thinking that Carlson's test results were not convincing enough is BIG news. Read the news about Carlson's flawed 'Double blind study' on Astro Research News Service.

Alan Turing, the chart of a genius
June is the month of birth and death of Alan Turing. His name was mentioned in a lecture about cryptanalysis and I quickly noted it. Here is his chart. Several sources mention this day, place and hour of birth.
CHART OF ALAN TURING

Alan Turing was a mathematician, logician and cryptanalyst. We owe him a lot because he broke German ciphers during WWII using the Enigma machine, one of the first steps to computers. However, there was no gratitude of the authorities, since they prosecuted him for being homosexual. His death is named suicidal but his family doubts that. It could have been accidental death because he died after consuming a poisoned apple...Or did he know too much?
(Unnatural death cause might be reflected by the minor aspects between Mars and Saturn (75 degrees) and between Mars and Pluto (semi square). Minor aspects are sometimes of great importance. They reveal obscure aspects. Find out more about that on this blog...*)
Posthumous recognition came in 1966. There is now an annual Turing Award given by the Association for Computing Machinery.
PALLAS, JUPITER AND URANUS (inventive patterns)
Turing had Pallas conjunct IC, Uranus on Midheaven and Jupiter on the Descendant. Pluto was rising before the Sun, conjunct Venus and the Sun was inconjunct Midheaven. The prominence of Pallas refers to the prominence of PATTERNS (...). Uranus with Midheaven is not only for being controversial in a disproportionate way (inconjunct Sun). Uranus also refers to techniques and mathematics. Mathematical patterns were of crucial importance.
Turing was inventive. He is one of the persons who founded a basis for computer technology. Jupiter and Uranus (symbols of the inventive mind) are angular, with Pallas...That means that he is inventive in finding patterns.
He had an orientation on Pluto-related affairs: money, influence, power, politics, danger, cases of life and death and sexuality, strongly going together with the earning money and intense sympathies and desires. Venus and Pluto are semi sextile Saturn, reflecting a possible disadvantage regarding the axis of money and love-sex nature. He had to undergo cruel chemical castration as a sort of a punishment for being gay; otherwise he had to go to jail! That was in the year before he died, in 1954.
PROMINENT
It takes a lot of prominent planets to become prominent. Alan Turing had six 'calling' planets (planets with no aspect within 5 degrees and within sign):
Sun without major aspects
Mercury without major aspects
Jupiter without major aspects and conjunct Descendant
Saturn without major aspects
Uranus without major aspects and conjunct Midheaven
Neptune without major aspects
Those are 6 out of 10 planets! This offers many chances and abilities. Jupiter and Uranus are the most important planets. So is Pluto (because Pluto rises before the Sun). Just like in the chart of Igor Stravinsky (see my blog Art&Astrology http://art-astrology.blogspot.com/2009/06/astrology-chart-igor-stravinsky.html), the prominence of the Uranus-Pluto combination lead to an arrest.
INCONJUNCTIONS
There are two inconjunctions: Mercury is inconjunct Jupiter for exaggerating facts. The Sun is inconjunct Uranus for being controversial (different from the rest) in a disproportionate way. Inconjunctions refer to 'lost'. The lost of a dear friend in 1930 (with Venus inconjunct MC in the progressed chart) hurt him deeply. Inconjunctions also refer to a 'but...'. The Mercury-Jupiter combination involves successful communication. But...the inconjunction tells us that he talked too much or...knew too much, just as the title of the book about him (written by David Leavitt) mentions...
PS MC is 157.5 degrees from Neptune/Pluto, Sun is conjunct Pluto (out of sign) and half semi square Neptune. The Neptune/Pluto combination reflects the theme of the silent force, hidden power and the dangerous secrets that is often found in the charts of magicians, and of detectives, too. Neptune/Pluto forces to be discrete. Click to find out more about that...
*) Minor aspects, major impact...

The sexuality in Sigmund Freud's chart

Sigmund Freud was born on May 6, 1956 at 18h30 LMT in Freiberg. He is a famous psychologer and psychiatrist. He is most of all famous because of the fact that he attributed a lot of psychological problems to sexuality. Why was sex so important in his life? Because it was in his chart!:) Three times!
1. Pluto is prominent (3 times)
Pluto is the symbol of power, politics, life and death and of sexuality. Pluto rises before his Freud's Son and is angular (on the crucial spot on the Descendant). And Pluto does not make Ptolemaic aspects in sign or orb 5 degrees.
That makes Pluto the most prominent planet in the chart. As Pluto is three times important the effect in his personality will be strong.
2. Venus <> Mars
Sexual activity is symbolised by the interaction of Venus and Mars. Venus is in the sign of Mars (Aries) and Mars is in the sign of Venus (Libra). The placement in each other's sign is called 'mutual reception'. The mutual reception of Venus and Mars is at the end of the MC-routing (Leo, Sun in Taurus, Venus in Aries <> Mars in Libra). That is an indication for the importance of sexual activity in his career.
3. Neptune inconjunct Midheaven
Neptune is ruling the fifth house of procreativity and is placed in the fifth equal house. Neptune is inconjunct Midheaven. Neptune is the symbol of fantasy, dreams and ideologies. The inconjunction points at 'disproportionate' connections. The Midheaven is the symbol of the career (the public function). In the theories of Freud explanations of dreams were very important and they were often 'translated' to sexual desires.
These are three reasons for the importance of sexuality in the theories of Sigmund Freud. There is a fourth one...and a fifth...
4. Mars inconjunct Pluto
According to the reading of Cafe Astrology, Freud should have to be less compulsive and forceful to accomplish things. The use of influence, force and strength is rather misbalanced with Mars inconjunct Pluto. Mars-Pluto afflictions sometimes reflect sexual problems.
5. Scorpio Ascendant*)

Sigmund Freud's theories seem to be the expression of Sigmund Freud's chart.
*) From the Basics (on my site Astromarkt):
You look nastier. stronger or sexier than you might really be. You are not easy to be approached. The cactus from outside! With bad aspects women are a bitch with this ascendant. You really look brave if you are a man and people might fear you.
Examples? Margaret Thatcher, Grace Kelly, Edit Piaf, Vladimir Putin
For more about the inconjunction, click the label. For Mars-Pluto combinations, see my site Astromarkt.net...
PS One of the interesting ideas of Freud that I found on the internet is: problems with menstruation start in the nose area. They can be treated with cocaine (...).

Chart of Darwin and transit Neptune

Exactly this year, now that the world is celebrating that it was 200 years ago that he was born, Neptune is making hard aspects with the natal Sun and Midheaven of Charles Darwin. The negative light has already been shining in the publicatons about a poll in my country. The results, according to the press, was that 19% of the Dutch don't believe in the theory of evolution and 22% believes in design by a God. Interesting, so, that still 72% of all interviewed persons says to believe in the theory of evolution. That is a large majority. The reports in the papers however mention the non-believers only. That is reflected by Neptune.
Mercury trine Uranus is the tightest aspect in the chart of Darwin. It means that he is a 'free thinker' or a person with an independent mind, someone to invent (Uranus) a theory (Mercury).

Astrology chart Galilei (and Mercury-Uranus)

No statue in the garden of the Vatican for Galileo Galilei, the man who was condemned to death because he said that earth revolved around the sun. He was spared because he said he was wrong, but...he was right, of course. Only in 1992 the Roman Catholic Church officially acknowledged that. And now they decided not to honour him with a statue, after all...
The chart of Galilei is here above. Notice that Sun, Mercury and Uranus are close together for the man with the controversial ideas (and an open mind). And when he lied that he was wrong, he simply twisted the fact and changed (Uranus) his mind (Mercury). Of course there is more to tell about Galilei and his chart (maybe later...)

Mercury-Saturn for Science
On December 24, I was thinking about Mercury and Saturn. I gave a few examples of scientist (Van der Waals, Einstein and Asimov) with a tight aspect between Mercury and Saturn or with both planets prominent in their charts.
Now I collected more example charts to support the idea that Mercury-Saturn = officially recognized knowledge = science.
There is a differentiation in the way the Mercury-Saturn pattern shows itself. They are also different kind of scientist. Still, the picures almost speak for themselves. Where needed I added a comment in the drawing of the chart.

PS there is a minor 15 degree aspect between Mercury and Saturn in the chart of Hertz.
PPS Another example of Mercury conjunct Saturn is Tycho Brahe. Click for the post about his chart...

Thinking about Mercury and Saturn

Mercury-Saturn is a combination of planets that links knowledge to prestige and seriousness while practice and realism joins the world of communications. It is the combination of the business and management of officially renowned knowledge. It is also the combination that restricts and limits knowledge to a certain area and to an establishment of students and their masters. Few people read scientific studies, unless it is related to their specific field.
Of course the effect of the Mercury-Saturn combination is stronger when an aspect is tight or the planets are prominent in the chart (on an angle, rising before the Sun or without Ptolemaic aspects).

Mercury is the planet of the young, the adolescent and the student. With a Mercury-Saturn combination in the chart the time of making fun and getting to know others (a partner perhaps) is restricted, limited and loaded with a burden of books to read. It is hard to be young with a Mercury-Saturn combination in the chart, because of the disadvantages of being a student. But there is another possible explanation of Mercury - Saturn. Saturn is also symbolizing age or time or delay.
In the charts of scientists it is easy to see the how and why of Mercury-Saturn. It is also there in the charts of people who are limited in communications or transportation in general, because of fear or because their abilities to communicate are limited*). Dutch poet Ingmar Heytze (born February 1970 in Utrecht, time unknown) has a tight square between Mercury and Saturn and he has been afraid to leave his home town until recently (after treatment). Saturn is also the symbol of fear...
JOHN D. VAN DER WAALS

John D. van der Waals was a physicist known for his work on an equation of state for gases and liquids (the 'Van der Waals-forces'). He started his academic study at the age of 25.
In his chart you see Mercury (disposing of the MC) calling and oriental, in a narrow conjunction (out of sign) with the Sun. Sun and Mercury are a close unit, with Saturn rising before them, calling!.
The Sun and Pluto are sesquisquare and Pluto is biquintile Saturn.
Mercury and Pluto are sesquisquare, too.
There is not a direct connection between Mercury and Saturn. Pluto is the 'missing link' and Pluto rules the 3rd house. He was a teacher before starting his studies.
You can see Mercury and Saturn in this chart as an 'oriental' combination of planets rising before the sun, in conjunction with the Sun. You can also see Mercury and Saturn 'calling'. Either way, they are important in this chart.
EINSTEIN

In the chart of Albert Einstein Mercury and Saturn are elevated and conjunct. That is symbolizing the fact that he was a scientist in a specific field. He is above all famous for his time related (Saturnal) message and ideas (Mercury). It seems that Einstein was not happy at school and that he felt the disadvantages (Saturn) of study (Mercury).
Einstein is famous all over the world. I like to contribute that to minor aspects of Jupiter and Pluto with his Midheaven (15d and quintile) and to the fact that Jupiter is rising before the Sun for the international orientation. This Jupiter in Aquarius is semi quintile Mercury and makes the Mercury-Saturn combination more tolerant towards new ideas.
ISAAC ASIMOV

Asimov was a professor of biochemistry and the author of several books about science and science fiction. He has a unique combination of the planets of science (Mercury-Saturn) with fiction (Neptune) in his chart and used all of the charts capacities. He was first of all the famous writer (Mercury angular and rising before the Sun. Notice the sense of style, arts and beauty that is symbolized by Moon in Taurus opposition Venus.
MERCURY AND SATURN FOR THE 'COMMON PEOPLE'
In the charts of less famous people the combination of Mercury and Saturn might refer to lost contacts, uneasy younger years due to hard discussions with the parents, restrictions at school, or whatever background that thought them the hard way that it is better to 'manage' what they say. And when they travel (or if...) they have to think about timing more than others have to do. Because their is always a chance that the car breaks down, the tickets get lost or the message didn't arrive in time...Mercury-Saturn combination narrows the mind and sometimes people with a hard aspect combination just don't want to hear, read or say what is not 'by the rules', 'in the book' or coming from an official or authority and they limit their information to the sources that they consider apropiate. It is then, that a prominent Jupiter like in the chart of Einstein or an Aquarius Midheaven with Neptune in opposition like in the chart of Asimov is a great help to explore the world of ideas that lies beyond the 'books'.
PROGRESSED CHARTS AND TRANSITS
Mercury-Saturn combinations in a progressed chart often refer to moments of saying goodbye (sometimes due to moving to other places and voyages, but also in times of divorces when you loose contact with the friends and family of a partner). There might also be a mental depression or 'dip', depending on the natal chart.
When a meeting is planned and there is a Mercury-Saturn contact somehow, there is a chance of being too early or too late and little chance of being on schedule.
*) A combination of Mercury-Saturn and Uranus sometimes limits the freedom to express an opinion.
