In general, Mercury-Uranus excellerates or disturbes the mind (and mouth) and vehicles, too. People with Mercury-Uranus tend to interrupt others and say controversial or 'funny' things out of context, sometimes (at least: in the eyes and ears of others. There are a lot astrologers among them:). When they travel there is a risk of hectic times, maybe because of accidents. That is not always their own fault.
I have a few examples of Mercury-Uranus related to accidents: August Busch IV, Gloria Estefan and Laura Bush. Two of them caused an accident. August Busch IV is in the news today after the death body of a woman was found in his house. He had a serious accident in 1983 that killed a young woman. Gloria Estefan had a serious accident in 1990 and had a hard time getting over it. And Laura Bush had an accident at age 17 that killed a young man and changed her forever.
AUGUST BUSCH IV
Adrienne Martin was the friend of August Busch IV. The cause of her death might have been hearth failure. Her ex-husband said that she had a ignored health problem (hearth).
It is not the first time that August Busch was mentioned related to a crash or a dead woman. On November 13, 1983 a young female passenger died in his Corvette after a crash. He left the scene of the crash, was arrested... and later blood and urine samples had 'reportedly been lost or damaged'. In 1985 he was arrested after a high-speed car chase after leaving a bar, accused of trying ro run over two officers with his Mercedes. So we might say, that driving and incidents are related. Here is the chart with positions at noon for the day of his birth. His hour of birth is unknown. On his day of birth there was a Mercury-Uranus-Pluto combination. When he had the accident, in the progressed chart Mercury was semi square Uranus, resonating the natal aspect. When a progression or transit links the same planets as in the natal chart, it is evident that any event might be of importance.
Here above is his progressed chart for 1983. Progressed Sun was semi square Mars (that is for getting hurt). Also, Transit Jupiter was inconjunct Jupiter and transit Pholus inconjunct Neptune. The inconjunctions refer to a lost. Transit Mercury (not in the chart drawing) was opposition his natal Mars.
GLORIA ESTEFAN
In the natal chart of Gloria Estefan Mercury is semi square Uranus, exactly. She had a cripling accident, caused by others, on March 20, 1990, with transit Chiron square progressed Sun (Chiron is the healer...), transit Pholus exactly square Mercury and semi square Uranus (a turning point with a traffic accident), transit Saturn sesquisquare natal Sun (bad luck, frustrating blockade) and progressed Sun sextile Uranus. Notice that the (P and N) Sun are in aspect with Saturn and Uranus like in the natal chart, causing a sudden blockade. Also: progressed Mars trine progressed Pholus and transit Mars conjunct progressed Pholus and trine progressed Mars. Pholus-Mars is the combination of a turning point in a struggle or battle that requires energy. Months of therapy and complicated surgery later, she continued her tour. I bet that her chart with hour of birth would provide more indications, but we will have to 'do it' with this one:
LAURA BUSH
Laura Bush's accident (that cost the life of a young man) changed her life. In the post about that event at age 17, I didn't mention the Mercury-Uranus distance of 163.7, within orb for a quindecile and with a 'calling' Uranus. As she mentions in 'Spoken from the heart', this accident strongly influenced her. The quindecile shows a strong focus or obsession.
MERCURY-URANUS
In general Mercury-Uranus means news, too because it is 'sudden information'. Mercury-Uranus also refers to sudden changes of opinion or a mental shock, insights or surprises. Uranus accelerates, and last time when Uranus was at Zero Aries (where Uranus will be again on March 11, 2011) what happened: the independence of Iraq and Saudi Arabia and the invention of the first (primitive) particle accelerator. The effect of Uranus is often alienation, enstrangement and acceleration. When Mercury meets Uranus, there might just be disturbance in transportation, quick changes in discussions or opinions because of news and a risk of accidents because of speed.

ACCIDENTS ARE IN THE STARS. An investigation of the Service for Advice in Trafic (Adviesdienst Verkeer en Vervoer) lead to the conclusion that there is a relationship between star sign and deathly accident. And that that relationship is corresponding with the ideas in astrology! In 2003 there were 1028 deathly victims in trafic in Holland. Of them, 106 were Aries, 106 Gemini, 100 Sagittarius, 100 Pisces, 92 Taurus, 86 Cancer, 83 Leo, 80 Virgo, 80 Aquarius, 76 Scorpio, 75 Libra, and only 43 of them were Capricorns. Capricorn is the most carefull sign.
And August Busch is a Gemini and I am a Sagittarius with a Pisces Ascendant. I had an accident with transit Uranus semi square Mercury, resonating the Mercury-Uranus opposition in the natal chart. Very typical it was a matter of communications. The armoured van that destructed my cute little red car had indicated to turn right and slowed down a bit, so I anticipated and started crossing the road. Then the van accelerated and hit my car. No one was hurt.
Statistics can't be used vice versa (neither can astrology), of course, so don't worry if you are a Gemini or Aries (just take care:) or if you have a Mercury-Uranus aspect. I have examples of Mercury-Uranus afflictions without traffic accidents, too. It is not just that aspect (as you can see in the examples). It is just part of the complex event, sometimes, like in the charts above.
PS About Mercury Retrograding today
Mercury is as fast as the wind, just like mercury (quicksilver). Birds are fast and they are like Mercury, with wings. Mercury is the symbol of communications and transport. Both are carried by the wind. You can't speak without air, you move air when you move.
On and around January 10, 2011, Mercury will be square Uranus again,just like on December 20 and in the chart of the eclipse of December, in the middle of all kind of difficulties with transport (road and air) and after retrograding since December 10.
